In Acts 1:8, Jesus imparted to His disciples a powerful message stating, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
During this time, Jerusalem and Judea were experiencing rapid changes due to the expansion of the Roman Empire and increased trade in the region. Jesus' disciples were undergoing a transformative process, learning to engage with individuals from various cultures and backgrounds, and acquiring the necessary language skills to effectively communicate with people from different nationalities. Initially, they were unequipped for the tasks assigned to them. Yet, as the verse begins, we learn that Jesus recognized their unreadiness and lack of courage. He assured them that they would receive the power of the Holy Spirit and become witnesses for Him throughout the world.
Today, as we observe the rapid transformations in our neighborhoods and identity due to immigration, the pertinent question arises: Are we adequately prepared to fulfill the Great Commission? The truth of Jesus' message to His disciples in Acts 1:8 holds relevance for us today as well. This summer, approximately 50 volunteers comprised of youth, young adults, and seniors courageously answered the call, stepping out in faith to organize and run summer outreach programs for immigrants, refugees, and new Canadians. During July and August, this dedicated volunteer team, representing all Rockpointe sites, logged 866 hours, demonstrating compassion and love in Jesus’ name. These initiatives proved to be a lifeline for the participants, as their families found encouragement and support through their involvement in the weekly RPI outreach programs.
The Summer Term concluded with a vibrant and inclusive outreach BBQ, which drew a remarkable attendance of over 370 individuals from 30 different nations. This event was made possible by the dedicated volunteers from the RockPointe family who selflessly devoted their time and effort. These volunteers formed meaningful connections with the participants, providing invaluable support as they navigated the complexities of language and culture. Their commitment went beyond the weekly programs, encompassing heartfelt prayers in the name of Jesus Christ for the needs and well-being of the attendees and their families. Furthermore, some actively assisted in the pursuit of employment opportunities and aided in crafting compelling resumes for those in need.
The voluneeers’ resounding 'yes' to the call of Jesus is rooted in their firm belief that God is bringing the nations to Canada so they have the opportunity to know His Son, Jesus Christ. How is the Holy Spirit longing to equip you in stepping out to reach the nations?
